Best Neighborhood to Stay in Athens for Visitors
For a first time visit, I would recommend staying in the Plaka neighborhood. Plaka is the old town of Athens, located in the center of everything you would want to see. The ancient sites are steps away, and you are also surrounded by local shops and restaurants. Plaka is bordered by Monastiraki, Syntagma, and the Acropolis – all popular tourist destinations. Most of the streets in this neighborhood are pedestrianized, so it is very walkable. And since Plaka is in the heart of the tourist area, it is pretty safe. We stayed in Plaka on our trip and loved the central location. It was close enough to the sights that we could beat the crowds and convenient enough to head back for a quick break if we needed to.
Accommodations that are “in the old town but on a quiet side street” are my jam, and the area of Makrigianni (also known as South Plaka) is exactly that. It is just south of the Plaka district – a calmer oasis next to the hubbub. Whether you prefer the comfort of an apartment for a more homey vibe or the convenience of a hotel, these options will have you covered.

Athens Apartment Rentals in Plaka
Plaka 2 Bedroom Apartment ($$)
This modern and elegant 2 bedroom apartment on a quiet side street of Plaka is in an ideal location. This building is located just behind the one we stayed in during our trip, and we actually prefer this spot because it’s much quieter and less crowded. If you’re traveling with a bigger group, this 2 bedroom apartment is a great option for more space.
South Plaka 1 Bedroom Apartment ($)
This bright 1 bedroom apartment in the South Plaka (or Makrigianni neighborhood) is nicely decorated and has enough space for a couple. I bookmarked it because of how bright and spacious it feels. It’s also just a short walk to the Acropoli station, making it really convenient for getting around.
South Plaka 2 Bedroom Apartment ($)
For more space, this nicely renovated 2 bedroom apartment in South Plaka is a great choice for a group traveling together. It feels like staying in your fancy friend’s apartment, but still comfortable enough to lounge and relax on the large L-shaped couch.

Athens Aparthotels in Plaka
For those who want apartment living but prefer the ease of having a front desk, an aparthotel is a great compromise. Aparthotels are apartments and studios run by hotels. Check in is at the front desk and you have the accessibility of front desk staff for assistance. But once you have the keys to the apartment, you have the privacy and independence of staying in a home rental.
AVA Hotel & Suites ($$)
The AVA Hotel & Suites has a variety of 1 bedroom and studio suites with a kitchenette, and some even have views of the Acropolis. These types of aparthotels are usually what I search for first now, because it is very convenient to know you have access to a front desk staff all day in case of any urgent questions or emergencies.

Athens Hotels in Plaka
Electra Palace Athens ($$)
If you prefer to stay in a hotel, the Electra Palace Athens is a nice splurge. The views of the Acropolis from the pool are stunning and the photos would make all your friends jealous. It is located more in the center of Plaka, but still on a quiet corner.
Electra Hotel ($)
For slightly lower rates, see if there are any deals for the Electra Palace Athens hotel’s sister hotel, the Electra Hotel. The Electra Hotel is located closer to Syntagma Square. Some of the rooms have more traditional decor, but that doesn’t take away from the comfort of the rooms. Their rooftop restaurant also has amazing views of the Acropolis to enjoy at breakfast or dinner and drinks.
A for Athens Hotel ($)
If you want to be closer to Monastiraki, the A for Athens Hotel is in a great location and has dramatic nighttime views of the Acropolis from its rooftop bar. It’s a little more in the heart of the action so we went with another option because we were worried about noise, but if you want that lively atmosphere then it’s perfect. Even if you don’t stay here, you should make a visit to the rooftop bar for a drink to soak in the view.
